She was the embodiment of Russia’s cultural values. Her name is synonymous with grace, elegance, and perfection. A subtle sort of peony, minor planet, and picturesque square are named after her mercurial talent. She was an inspirational muse for Robert F. Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, and millions of admirers around the world. Iconic prima ballerina assoluta, Maya Plisetskaya, granted ballet the Russian citizenship and made it the strongest cultural drawcard. Against all expectations, the Digital Country Index indicates that Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters are still up to date and show no signs of becoming old-fashioned.

Maya Plisetskaya always strived for perfection both in technical mastery and dramatic presence. These are two main pillars of Russian ballet that has the most potential and authority to become the leader on the world stage. Being well hidden under the Iron Curtain, Russian dancing tradition has preserved its authenticity and distinctive style that send shivers down the spines of many international guests.

The Digital Country Index 2016 reveals that Russia obtained more searches for Performing Arts than 38 other European countries combined and ranks the 3rd most searched country in this category after Italy and Hong Kong!

What is a time-honoured Russian formula for conquering the ballet world? There is something unique about the way the country went about the obsession with dancing. Deriving inspiration from industrialized Europe, the Russian mighty czars were determined to attract the West to the country, not the other way around. Not only was ballet viewed as a form of entertainment, but also the quickest route to coveted international glory.

Such an idealised approach did not leave the space for any imprecision. In the 18th century, abandoned children were raised from birth to be “correct” ballet dancers who would personify a new image of a cultivated Russia.

Nutcracker Bolshoi Libretto by Yuri Grigorovich

Classical ballet companies passed this philosophy onto generations. Today, a ballerina of the Bolshoi is a status that implies unwavering dedication and readiness to make sacrifices for the sake of tradition. There are hundreds of applicants for a single spot in ballet schools, especially in the foremost Moscow and St. Petersburg ballet academies. But few meet stringent acceptance criteria. A yardstick of quality demands the best of the best.

Undeniably, Russian traditions are so rich and deep-rooted that neither political unrest nor flagging economy can change the world perception of ‘Rus’ as a great cultural gold mine.

The Digital Country Index proves that no sanctions can be imposed on aesthetic delight. Art enthusiasts all over the world keep breaking the stereotypes of a ‘cold severe’ land and travel thousands of miles to enjoy cultural beauties on offer.

Well done Russia!
